Wooden chests and folding screens finish in the timeless technique of rayado lacquer. Magically, from successive layers of color, stylized animals, exuberant flowers and geometric designs appear married to the unmistakable fragrance of the woods from Olinalá.

The pieces that Damaso Ayala elaborates with great skill are the most characteristic of Olinalá, prized for the beauty and precision of their lines and for the decorative motifs employed which date back more than two centuries, all serving to preserve a traditional Mexican aesthetic.

Through the use of chia oil and natural pigments, Ayala creates the most intricate designs. The process is as intricate as its designs and can take more than 2 months to make one piece. The rayado incising is performed on the top layer while the work is still fresh. To incise the designs he usually uses a turkey quill, an awl or a large thorn.
